For the Year 8 camp, the boys will be putting into practice what they have been learning in their outdoor education lessons and also the skills they have learnt at the previous year’s Year 7 camp.
Activities will consist of team building exercises and will also be more focussed on outdoor education than in Year 7. Boys will lead themselves on a short walk to one of Surrey’s highest points; Holmbury Hill, one of Surreys ‘three peaks’. The emphasis for this camp will be on the boys taking initiative and putting their map reading skills and knowledge to work with them leading the way, a stepping stone towards navigating their way around a DofE expedition route the following year, at Year 9 camp.
During their time at The Mill, Year 8 boys will also participate in a cross-curricular project where they will be challenged to call upon their creative, observational and analytical skills. This will build on the boys’ experience from Year 7 camp, and they will have increased levels of responsibilities, having to act both independently and co-operatively in teams of varying size. The Year 8s will also receive some quiet time each night to write or create a reflective record of their experience in the form of a diary entry.
