  • The Mill

William Ellis’ centre for outdoor learning, The Mill, is in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. It is situated in the picturesque village of Forest Green which lies nestled within the Surrey Hills just outside Dorking.

Forming a strong part of our rich tradition, visits to The Mill have formed the backbone of our personal development programme for students for over 30 years.

The Mill is an old corn watermill with attached cottages that sit in an estate of about ten acres of woodland, meadow and stream. The buildings have been sympathetically converted to provide year round sleeping accommodation for up to 40 pupils and staff. In the warmer months more can be accommodated when students are able to camp in the meadows that surround the property. Facilities at the centre also include a field work laboratory, a computer equipped classroom and a games room.

Our programme that takes place at The Mill includes yearly camps at key stage 3 encompassing a wide variety of activities from water sports to in situ outdoor art projects. The camps are also designed as an introduction to the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme which students have the opportunity to participate in at key stages 4 and 5.

The Mill is also used for study field trips in subjects such as Geography and Biology and master classes in Music and Drama throughout the key stages.
