Modern Foreign Languages

Our School is proud to have been awarded an International School Award Certificate for introducing internationalism to our school, via exchange trips and hosting foreign students, as well as language assistants.

The main aims of our Faculty are:

  • to stimulate pupils' interest and curiosity about other languages and cultures in the world in which they live as part of a lifelong process.
  • to ensure pupils have the skills necessary for the workplace in an ever-increasing global marketplace.

The structure of the MFL curriculum

Key Stage 3

  • In Year 7, all students study French. The curriculum is designed to support and extend those who learn some French in primary school and those who do not.
  • In Years 8 & 9, the majority of students begin to study an additional foreign language - Spanish or German. All students continue to study French.

Key Stage 4

  • In Years 10 and 11, almost all students (90%) are expected to study at least one foreign language up to GCSE. If they have studied two languages in Years 8 & 9, they can choose which language to continue with. If they have only studied French, they will continue with this.
  • Some students study two languages for GCSE as part of the curriculum.
  • A small number (10%) of students receive additional support with English and literacy, and complete a Princes' Trust qualification. The decision for students not to study a language is made after careful consideration with input from their languages teacher and Head of Year.
  • Some students also learn Bengali and Mandarin as part of the language enrichment offer, and sit GCSE exams in these subjects. Students may also sit GCSE exams in a language that they study, or can speak, read and write in - in the past this has included Arabic, Portuguese and Polish.

Key Stage 5

  • French, Spanish and German are all offered at A Level every year within the LaSWAP consortium. For more details, please see the curriculum offer at www.laswap.camden.sch.uk
