Our department is characterised by a strong sense of enthusiasm for our subject areas and for finding ways to communicate that enthusiasm. Our core aim is to ensure all students reach their full potential, with the knowledge and skills to become reflective, critical and powerful users of language. We hope that students will enjoy their work in English and strive to ensure that our curriculum offers a rich and diverse range of learning experiences.
We are a team of English specialists, teaching English Language and Literature from Year 7 to 11, English Literature in Year 12 and 13 and Film Studies at A level. There is a wealth of experience in the department and we believe our collaborative practice enables us to keep our curriculum offer vibrant and varied. A crucial part of our work is raising literacy standards across the school and we also provide targeted support through interventions and small group work. Our schemes of work are designed to reflect the interconnectedness of aspects of language and literacy development. We work in close collaboration with other faculties to raise achievement across the age range. The department produces a magazine, ‘From the English Corridor’, that features students’ recent work.
The department runs lunchtime clubs (including Latin for students in KS3 or 4 and film for sixth formers) and after-school intervention/guidance sessions.
The department has put together two fiction reading lists which may support your son in widening his reading experience at home or independently at school. Please see attachments below. We are keen to receive ideas for new additions for these lists.
